If you are looking to plan your first trip to Hawaii, you may find yourself overwhelmed with the choices and wanting to make the most out of your time and you are NOT alone. There are 6 main islands you are able to visit and they all offer something different. Choosing your destination will depend on several personal preferences, your budget and how long you plan to visit.

OŹ»ahu (“The Gathering Place”), blends city energy (Honolulu, WaikÄ«kÄ«) with natural beauty (North Shore surf, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay).

Might be the island for you if: You want nightlife, shopping, history (Pearl Harbor), and iconic beaches.

Maui (“The Valley Isle”) = Luxury + romance

This is the most popular destination for celebrity sightings. It’s romantic and scenic, known for luxury resorts, whale watching, and the famous Road to Hāna. Data from the Hawaiian Tourism Association rates this as the most expensive island to visit overall.

Might be the island for you if: You’re looking for a mix of adventure and relaxation. It’s popular for honeymoons and upscale getaways.

Big Island (“The Orchid Isle”) = Adventure + variety

You can count on the main Hawaii Island for dramatic landscapes, active volcanoes, black and green sand beaches, snow-capped Mauna Kea and lush rainforests.

Might be the island for you if: You want outdoor adventure, stargazing, and diverse climates all in one island. In fact, you can experience 11 of the 13 climatic zones here!

KauaŹ»i (“The Garden Isle”) = Nature + hiking

Kaua’i is known for being lush, rugged, and laid-back. Highlights include Waimea Canyon (ā€œGrand Canyon of the Pacificā€) and the Nā Pali Coast.

Might be the island for you if: You’re into hiking, outdoor exploration, and stunning natural scenery with fewer crowds.

MolokaŹ»i (“The Friendly Isle”) = Culture + quiet

Here you will find unspoiled and authentic Hawaiian culture, small-town charm, no big resorts, and the world’s tallest sea cliffs.

Might be the island for you if: You value cultural immersion, peace, and off-the-beaten-path experiences.

LānaŹ»i (“The Private Isle”) = Exclusivity + luxury

More so than any other island, this one is the most exclusive in terms of getting there and having more limited options. It’s quiet and known for high-end resorts, rugged jeep trails, and remote beaches.

Might be the island for you if: You want seclusion, romance, and a luxury experience worthy of the splurge.
